What should I buy?

Most people start with a kit, then move to spawn once they want bigger harvests. Here's how the options differ.

BeginnerGrow kit
A block of substrate already full of mycelium. Cut it open, mist it twice a day and pick mushrooms in about 1–3 weeks. Oyster is the most forgiving; lion's mane is the popular next step.
Next stepGrain spawn
Grain fully colonised by one species, used to inoculate a larger batch of substrate such as straw, pellets or Master's Mix. Use it fresh; it keeps a few weeks in the fridge.
OutdoorsPlug spawn
Wooden dowels you hammer into freshly cut hardwood logs. Slow to start, often 6–18 months to a first flush, but logs can fruit for several years. Shiitake is the classic choice.
Lab workLiquid culture
Mycelium suspended in sugar water in a syringe, used to inoculate sterilised grain to make your own spawn. Needs clean technique and a pressure cooker or still air box.
