Best Mushroom Grow Kits in the UK (2026 Guide)
If you've never grown mushrooms before, start with an oyster mushroom kit from a UK grower. Oysters are the most forgiving species, they fruit within a couple of weeks of opening and a fresh kit from a UK farm arrives in better shape than one that's been sitting in a warehouse.
Below are our picks from the suppliers in this directory, what to look for when you buy and how to get a good crop. We've checked every supplier mentioned here against their own website, but we haven't grown every kit ourselves so the picks are based on what each supplier offers.
Our picks
| Best for | Supplier | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Complete beginners | GroCycle | Growing gourmet mushrooms in Devon since 2009. Kits are Soil Association certified and guaranteed to grow, with replacements if one fails. |
| A gift | Caley Brothers | Their gift box comes with a voucher so the person receiving it chooses when the fresh spawn is sent and picks from four oyster varieties. Kew's shop sells it for £23.50. |
| Fastest first harvest | Fungi Futures | Pearl oyster kits arrive part-grown, with a first crop about 14 days later. |
| Lion's mane | Wiggly Wigglers, Cotswold Mushrooms, Grow Kit Mushroom | All three sell lion's mane kits. Wiggly Wigglers prepares its kits on the farm in small batches. |
| Trying unusual species | Fat Fox Mushrooms | A London urban farm with one of the widest ranges in the UK, including native species such as phoenix oyster and velvet shank. |
| Outdoor logs | Gourmet Woodland Mushrooms, Fat Fox Mushrooms | Log kits and dowel spawn for growing shiitake and others in the garden. Slower to start but logs can fruit for years. |
| Scotland | Some Funguys | Grey oyster fruiting blocks from an Edinburgh farm, sold through Grow Urban. |
Other UK suppliers with kits: Yorkshire Mushroom Emporium (Leeds), Merit Mushrooms (Hertfordshire), Slad Valley Mushrooms (Gloucester), Fungi Foods (grown in North Wales) and Urban Farm Mushrooms (Darlington). See all of them on our grow kits page.
Which species should you start with?
- Oyster
- The best first kit. Fast, forgiving and comes in several colours: grey, pink, blue, golden and pearl. Pink and golden oysters like warmth so they suit a heated kitchen.
- Lion's mane
- The popular second kit. It grows as a shaggy white ball rather than caps and tastes a little like crab. It's slower than oyster and wants steady humidity so mist it often.
- Shiitake
- Familiar from the supermarket but trickier at home. Indoor blocks often need soaking or a cold spell to start fruiting. Outdoor logs are slow but long-lasting.
- White button or chestnut
- Grown on compost with a casing layer rather than a block. Cheap and widely sold in garden centres, but less exciting than gourmet species.
What to look for when you buy
- Grown in the UK and posted fresh. A ready-to-grow kit is a living block. The shorter its journey, the better it fruits. Most UK farms post within a few days of making the block.
- An open-by date. Many kits need opening within a few days to a week of arriving. If you're buying a gift, a voucher kit avoids this problem.
- A growing guarantee. Several suppliers will replace a kit that doesn't fruit. It's a good sign they're confident in their blocks.
- Delivery to where you live. Some shops don't post to Northern Ireland or charge more for it so check before ordering.
- Indoor or outdoor. Indoor kits fruit in weeks on a windowsill. Outdoor logs and beds take months but keep producing.
How to get a good harvest
- Open it promptly. Follow the supplier's instructions and don't leave the box sitting for a week.
- Keep it humid. Mist the cut area two or three times a day. Dry air is the most common reason kits stall.
- Give it light, not sun. A bright spot out of direct sunlight is ideal. Mushrooms don't need sunlight to grow but do use light to sense which way to fruit.
- Avoid heat and draughts. Keep it away from radiators and open windows.
- Pick at the right time. Harvest oysters when the cap edges start to flatten, before they curl upwards and drop spores.
- Try for a second flush. Many kits produce two or three crops. After harvesting, let the block rest for a week or two, then soak or mist it again following the supplier's advice.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a mushroom grow kit take?
Oyster kits usually show mushrooms within one to three weeks of opening. Lion's mane and shiitake tend to take longer. Outdoor logs can take six months to over a year for the first crop.
How many harvests will I get?
Typically one good flush and often one or two smaller ones after that. Afterwards the spent block can go on the compost heap or in the garden, where it sometimes fruits again.
Is it safe to eat mushrooms from a kit?
Yes, gourmet kits from reputable suppliers grow one known edible species. Cook them before eating, as you would shop-bought mushrooms and throw away anything that looks or smells wrong.
What's the best time of year to start a kit?
Indoor kits work year round in a normal house. Kits are popular Christmas presents so order early in December or choose a voucher kit.
What should I grow after a kit?
If you want bigger harvests, the next step is buying grain spawn and growing on straw or hardwood pellets. See our list of UK spawn suppliers and substrate and grow bag suppliers.
